revision topic 1 Flashcards
what can forces change?
the shape of an object and its state of motion/rest
what is newton’s third law of motion?
when two objects push and pull on each other they exert an equal and opposite force on each other
what is friction?
the force that opposes the motion of any surfaces that come in contact with each other when they slide or try to slide over each other
what is the resultant force?
a single force that has the effect of all the forces acting on an object
what is weight?
The weight of an object is the force of gravity acting on it
what is mass?
the quantity of matter in an object
what is the gravitational field strength?
is the force acting on each kg of an object
weight equation?
W=MG
what makes an object elastic?
an object is elastic if it returns to its original shape if the forces deforming it are removed
what is an extension?
its the increased length of a stretched material from its original length
extension = streatched length - original length
hooke’s law states?
the extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applied to it, as long as it doesn’t exude the limit of proportionality
force applied = extension x spring constant
what is elastic energy?
its the potential energy stored in an object because of the work done on it
