Revision sheet questions Flashcards
What are the different stores of energy?
Chemical energy - fuels, foods and chemicals in batteries
Gravitational potential energy - due to position of object in relation to the ground
Elastic potential energy - energy stored in an object when it’s squashed / stretched
Thermal energy - energy an object has due to its temperature
What is the energy store associated with a raised object?
Gravitational potential energy (GPE) - the higher up it is the greater the GPE
What is the main energy transfer when a ball is dropped from a height?
The gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy as the ball falls down
Describe the changes in energy stores when a car brakes to a stop?
The chemical energy in the car’s fuel is initially turned into kinetic energy as the car moves
When the car brakes, the friction leads to an energy transfer from kinetic energy to thermal energy in the car’s brakes and is transferred to the surroundings
State the law of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated
What is the energy transfer in a burning fire place?
The chemical energy is fuel is converted to thermal energy as the fuel is burnt
