What is the ACTIVITY of a radioctive source?
Its the number of unstable atoms in the source that decay per second
What is unit of ACTIVITY ?
Becquerel or Bq
How much is 1 Becquerel?
1 Becquerel = 1 decay per second
What is counter rate ?
Counter rate is the number of counts per second
How can you mesure the radio activity of a sample?
You can measure the radio activity of a sample of a radioactive material by mesuring counter rate from it.
How quickly can the counter rate fall to nearly 0 ?
RA decreases over time but it depends on the material
What is half - life ?
It is the idea to measure how quickly the radioactivity decreases
What is the average time taken for the half life of a radioactive isotope?
- number of nuclei of the isotope to half
- for the counter rate from the isotope to half its initial value
What is radioactive decay?
it is a random prosess, when an unstable nucleus decays intp another element and gives out radiation to be more stabele.
Why is it not posible to predict when a nucleus will decay?
This is because radioactive deccay is a random process
