Revision questions Flashcards
Why do protein chains adopt a spiral shape?
The spiral shape is a result of the secondary structure, formed of hydrogen bonding of atoms in the peptide bond which are near to, but not adjacent, each other. Note that C=O bonds can form hydrogen bonds in biochemistry.
What is the purpose of a coenzyme?
Coenzymes act in combination with enzymes to enable a reaction to operate at a functional rate. Coenzymes are non-protein molecules, often derived from vitamins, and bind to the active site during catalysis.
What are optical isomers/enantiomers?
An isomer is a non-superimposable mirror image of the original compound structure. It contains a chiral carbon with the same constituent atoms.
What are the products of incomplete combustion?
CO(g), H2O(l), C(s)
Explain how the IR spectrum is used to derive information about a functional group.
The peaks on a spectrum indicate the absorption of IR radiation typical of a specific group.
2NO(g) + O2(g) -> 2NO2(g) ΔH = -114kJ/mol
How many kJ of energy are released for every mol of NO reacted?
57kJ
What are two aspects of electrode design which improve the efficiency of a fuel cell?
Highly porous electrodes and the incorporation of a catalyst.
What does m/z stand for?
Mass to charge ratio.
What happens when an alcohol is oxidised?
The oxidation of the alcohol to the alkanal is signified by the loss of hydrogen from the alkanol in order to produce a double bond to the oxygen.
