Facts about Muhammad’s early life.

A

Orphaned before he had reached the age of six, he was raised under the protection of his uncle Abu Talib.
Muhammad began working as a merchant and became known for his trustworthiness.
When he was about twenty-five, he married Khadija, a wealthy widow whose status elevated Muhammad’s position in Meccan society. Muhammad and Khadija had four daughters and two sons, both sons died in infancy.
Muhammad was a well known, honest and trusted business man. He was worried about Mecca. He saw the rich merchants cheating the poor and people gambling, drinking and fighting. They worshipped idols and made sacrifices to false gods.

What happened to Muhammad in the cave?

A

Muhammad began to have visions and hear mysterious voices. (He was around age 40)
(Jibral) appeared to him in the form of a man and ordered him to recite from a piece of cloth. Muhammad could not read.
He ran thinking an evil spirit was attacking him but the voice called “O Muhammad, you are the messenger of God, and I am the angel Jibral.”
Eventually, the angel told Muhammad to begin proclaiming that there is only one god, Allah

What happened during the hijrah?

A

Muhammad slowly began to attract some followers
When Muhammad began to oppose and speak out against the ‘polytheism’ of Mecca, the rich and powerful merchants knew the new religion would be disastrous for business (idol sales) and that the people of Mecca could no longer do as they pleased (drinking, gambling etc.)
The ruling ‘elite’ ganged up against Muhammad and his followers, and began to persecute them.
In 622AD, Muhammad and his followers were driven out of Mecca and they settled in Medina
Muhammad, and his followers, lived in Medina for ten years, attracting new followers.

A

This is the pilgrimage. Every Muslim must make the journey at least once in their lifetime if possible and help finance those who can’t afford it.

A

They live pure lives, therefore shouldn’t swear, quarrel, have sexual relations.
The men are supposed to have pure thoughts so women who normally cover their faces don’t during Hajj

A

Men all dress the same, two sheets of white cotton with no seams, no head coverings
Women don’t wear special clothes. They wear head veils and ensure all clothing is simple
Pilgrims go barefoot or wear open sandals
Pilgrims do not wear jewellery and perfume or use scented soap. Hair and nails aren’t trimmed during Hajj
