Principles of development
Development follows a pattern
Begins with the control of the head and works down the body
Begins with large uncontrolled body movements (gross) and works it way to refined and precise (fine)
Rates of development varies between children
PILES
Physical - gross and fine motor skills
Intellectual (cognitive) ability to think and process information
Language - ability to talk and make sounds
Emotional - the way they express their feelings
Social- ability to make relationships
Brain development
Axon- part of neuron where electricity travels
Axon terminal and dendrite - part of the neuron involved in making a connection with another neuron
Myelin- the substance that coats the axon
Myelination- the process of myelin coating
Neural pathway - an established route for signals in the brain
Synapse- the gap between 2 neurons
Gestation
The period of time between conception and birth
Reflexes
Automatic movements that do not require a conscious decision
The reflex when a baby is looking for a teet after you rub their cheek
Rooting reflex
The reflex a baby does when they feel danger
Moro reflex
The reflex of when you put a finger in the child’s Palm
Palmar grasp
When you hold a baby up right and they move their legs
Stepping reflex
What is a centile chart ?
A chart that shows if a child is falling within the norms for their age
What is a milestone ?
A stage that a child has to reach to meet the norms for their age
