Revision Flashcards
What is a pathogen
It is a harmful or disease causing bacteria.
Oesophagus?
The long tube between the mouth and the stomach
Large intestine
The shorter wider tube that follows the small intestine
Pancreas
A gland below the stomach which makes lots of chemicals
Small intestine
The long thin winding tube that food goes through after it leaves the stomach
Starch
IODINE
Glucose
BENEDICTS
Protein
BIURET
Chemical digestion
The breaking down of large molecules into smaller molecules by enzymes
Physical digestion
It happens in you mouth and stomach, the breaking down of large food particles into smaller ones
Carbohydrates
Gives energy, bread and cerials
Protein
Growth and repair, fish and chicken
Minerals
Small amounts to maintain health, salt and milk
Lipids (fats)
Gives energy and helps to store energy, nuts and butter
Fibre
To help the food move through the digestive system, vegetables and bran
Water
Needed for cells and body fluids, water and juice
Vitamins
Small amounts to maintain health, fruits and vegetables
Why is Vit C important?
To prevent scurvy and it’s good for growth and repair, it can be found in oranges
Independent variable?
The thing you change
Dependent variable?
The thing you measure
Control variable?
The thing you keep the same
Where does absorption occur?
In the small intestine
Villi?
They increase the rate of absorption due to more surface area for nutrients to be absorbed
Enzymes?
Proteins that speed up chemical reactions. E.g breakdown of large food molecules
What enzymes?
Carbohydrase
Protease
Lipase
Peristalsis?
Food moves through the digestive system, using muscular contractions to push food along
Ingestion?
The process of food entering the mouth and going into the digestive system
Digestion?
Breaking down large insoluble molecules into small soluble ones that we absorb into the blood
Absorption?
The process by which small, soluble food molecules pass through the wall of the small intestine into the bloodstream
Decomposers?
Fungi
Decompose?
When you decompose something you break large molecules into smaller molecules by bacteria or fungi
