What are the 3 characteristics of a dichotomy?
- There is an opposition/binary between the two subjects
- The two are mutually exclusive
- Culture places a higher social value on one over the other
What is Modernity and what are the 4 main effects that have come about because of it?
Patterns of social life that emerged post-feudalism (industrialization and enlightened principles)
- Increase scientific rationality
- Society increasingly rationalizing industrialization
- Secularism
- Increase in leisure time
What is secularism?
The separation of church from most other institutions such as state, science , education etc.
Describe the concept of “Translation of Knowledge”
Taking expert knowledge (usually biomed) and decontextualizing the information from its intended purpose; usually it will be REcontextualized in the form of expert knowledge but used in a new field or means for which it was not designed
–> Helps destabilize idea of “Human Body”
What are the 3 intersecting processes of consumer culture?
- Production
- Marketing
- Consumption of goods and services
What are the 3 defining characteristics of Consumer culture?
- Consumption is continuously encouraged for more production (supply/demand)
- Consumption as a source of social status differentiation for all social groups
- Consumption is a major source of our pleasures and dreams

What has the body become within late modernity?
A market of commerce and vehicle of consumption which is used to symbolize “self”
ex. I consume popculture and wear nerdy shirts to represent my “self”
