Summarize “The London Riots – On Consumerism Coming Home To Roost”
- It discusses the social inequality created by consumerism, people are “haves” or “have-nots” in terms of the products they buy/consume
- One’s social standing is increased with the more they consume/replace objects while those who are defective consumers (the have-nots) lead a life unfulfilled and unrespected by others

Summarize “The mundanity of Excellence” by Chambliss
- Debunking the idea of the “natural” athlete who succeeds due to “talent”, as Chambliss says, Talent is not a thing.
- Excellence comes from Qualitative differentiation (changes in technique, attitude, discipline)
- “Talent” is actually privilege such as access to coaches, training, income, genetics
- An amalgamation of small skills and achievements
Summarize “The Politics of Women’s Body Images and Practices”
- Looks at the discourse between how women’s bodies are presented in popular media vs the reality for many women and how this creates a normalizing gaze
- Because of biological endowments it is often difficult to achieve the “ideal” look portrayed in magazines, this disempowers females.
- Women look at themselves (society does as well) through an evaluative gaze which can create a pan optical effect
- Healthy is inferred to lead to beauty, and is measured by aesthetic means (inches and pounds) not VO2, strength, flexibility etc.

- Nike/Jordan release a special edition shoe in limited supply which causes violence and even deaths for which they do not take responsibility

Summarize “Hunger to Win” podcast
There is a huge weight issue with modern gymnastics that has multiple interlocking layers which create an normalizing gaze that naturalizes unhealthy eating and training practices in gymnastics.
- Girls want to be competitive gymnasts but due the way judges evaluate, equipment is built, and coaches select athletes these girls are required to be extremely small and underweight. If they gain any weight at all they are emotionally and physically abused. This internalizes the normalizing gaze to create self discipline.

Summarize “Neoliberalism and Globalization”
- We use to be in the “welfare state” a form of capitalism which saw the government providing many services to the people, but since the 70’s capitalism has entered a state of permanent crisis and began to move towards Neoliberalist (other end of capitalism spectrum) tendencies which lead to the shift to private and corporate sector from the public sector.
- Canadians were convinced to take fewer social benefits,
- US is the leading force behind the global capitalist economy.

Summarize “Definitely Not the Opera” podcast
Two main examples of racism are the U of Regina cheer team and Jordan Tutu’s experience during the AHL.
- The cheer team took pictures dressed as cowboys and indians in suggestive poses, this was seen as racist, and cultural appropriation not acknowledging how indigenous culture actually is
- Jordan Tutu experienced much racism during his time in the minors as he played a rough style of hockey that got under the skin of veteran players, he was called racist names.
Summarize “The Mind-Body Revisited”
- The mind and body have been traditionally seen as two opposites for most of history due to the foundations of science, religion, and education being built upon the foundation of philosophy which separated the M/B
- This dichotomy has created a hierarchy where the mind> body. The two big philosophers were Plato and Descartes who were mostly responsible for the dichotomy.
- By viewing the body as an object and separate from the mind we devalue subjective information and decrease morals that have kept our bodies safe.

is Race real?
No it is a social construct as the differences between individual and groups of individuals are genetically/scientifically so minute they are meaningless, what happens is that there are social meanings attached to perceived physical differences.
What is racialization?
White people have had the power to categorize or name people of color while simultaneously making white people “raceless”
- Racialization is an invisible system which both disenfranchised and privileged follow unknowingly and is a social cultural and individual process
