Review CHAP 20 Flashcards
How do the 2 divisions of the autonomic nervous system modify heart rate?
SYMPATHETIC: INCREASING ACTIVITY; INCREASE HEART RATE. PARASYMPATHETIC: MODIFYING & DECREASING HEART RATE
Function of angiotensin 2 in terms of blood pressure (increase/decrease? How?).
VASOCONSTRICTOR; INCREASE BLOOD PRESSURE BECAUSE IT DRAWS IN MORE WATER; DECREASES URINE FORMATION
Know the 3 arteries branching off the ascending aorta.
BRACHIOCEPHALIC TRUNK: RIGHT SIDE; SUPPLIES BLOOD TO UPPER LIMBS, THORACIC, NECK, & HEAD.
LEFT COMMON CAROTID ARTERY: SUPPLIES BLOOD TO LEFT SIDE OF NECK & HEAD.
LEFT SUBCLAVIAN ARTERY: SUPPLIES BLOOD TO LEFT UPPER LIMB & THORACIC.
Know the arteries associated with the descending aorta.
RIGHT COMMON ILIAC ARTERY & LEFT COMMON ILIAC ARTERY
P-WAVE:
ATRIAL DEPOLARIZATION
QRS COMPLEX:
VENTRICULAR DEPOLARIZATION
T-WAVE:
VENTRICULAR REPOLARIZATION
What function do capillaries provide?
SITE OF GAS EXCHANGE
Vessel wall layers in relation to arteries, veins, & capillaries:
CAPILLARY & VEIN WALLS ARE VERY THIN; ARTERIES HAVE THICK WALLS
Define lumen. Relation to veins & arteries?
INSIDE OF VESSEL WHERE BLOOD IS TRANSPORTED. VEINS HAVE LARGE LUMEN; ARTERIES HAVE SMALL LUMEN
Valves:
ONLY VEINS HAVE VALVES; MADE OF FIBROUS CT FLAPS
Direction of blood flow relative to the heart:
ARTERIES: AWAY FROM HEART. VEINS: TOWARD THE HEART
Order of tunic layers?
TUNICA INTIMA (DEEPEST), TUNICA MEDIA (MIDDLE), & TUNICA EXTERNA (SUPERFICIAL)
What is each tunic layer comprised of?
INTIMA: ENDOTHELIUM
MEDIA: THICKER IN ARTERIES BECAUSE MORE ELASTIC
EXTERNA: VASA VASORUM WHICH SUPPLIES NUTRIENTS TO A LARGE VESSEL; THICK IN VEINS
