reversible reactions+ equilibrium Flashcards
what is the definition of a reversible reaction?
a reaction that occurs in both the forward and reverse direction
what do the forwards and reverse reactions have to be for dynamic equilibrium?
the reactants and products have to react at the same rate
what is dynamic equilibrium
where the rate of forwards reaction equals the backwards reaction
what conditions are needed for dynamic equilibrium
-in a closed container, otherwise substances escape and isnt at equilibrium
what is shifting equilibrium
-the equilibrium will shift in the direction which cancels out the change in conditions
what happens if you add more reactants?
-the equilibrium will shift to the right
what are the three things that cause shifting of equilibrium?
-concentration
-pressure
-temperature
what happens if you add more products
-the equilibrium will shift to the left
what happens if you increase the pressure
the equilibrium will shirt to the side with the least molecules
what happens if you decrease the pressure
the equilibrium will shift to the sides with the most molecules
what happens if you increase the temperature
the equilibrium will shift in the endothermic direction
what happens if you decrease the temperature
the equilibrium will shift in the exothermic direction
what happens if there is equal amount of molecules on each side if the pressure changes
the pressure won’t effect the rate
what happens If the concentration increases?
equilibrium will shift to the right
-makes more product
what happens if the pressure decreases
equilibrium will shift to the left
-makes less product
