6:1
You must have a valid ticket before you board a train or you may be subject to a penalty fare

Unless:

  • No ticket buying facilities at the station
  • You have authorisation to board a train by a member of staff written/verbal
  • Ticket office is closed
  • Self service ticket machine is not in working order or will not accept you method of payment (get a promise to pay)
  • You have a disability and ticket purchasing arrangements are not accessible to you

  2. Travel in first class with a Standard ticket
  3. Travel on a train where the ticket isn’t valid

  5. Travel without supporting documents i.e Railcards etc
