Retinal Detachment Flashcards
What causes posterior vitreous detachment?
Vitreous collapse (with age)
Benign
Very common
Posterior vitreous detachment symptoms
Floaters (vitreous condensations)
Flashes (retinal stimulation from traction)
Complications of retinal tear if left untreated
Can allow fluid from vitreous space behind retina so it peels off -> retinal detachment
Symptoms of retinal detachment
Black curtain/loss of vision progressing across visual field over hours to days (i.e. not like TIA).
Complications of retinal detachment if left untreated
Blindness
Risk factors for retinal detachment
Short-sightedness (myopia)
Trauma
Examination and fundoscopy findings in retinal detachment
Field loss on examination
RAPD and visible detachment on fundoscopy
Management of retinal detachment
Retinal surgery e.g. vitrectomy/cryotherapy/gas
