What is infective keratitis?
Corneal infection -> corneal ulcer
Is infective keratitis usually bilateral or unilateral?
Unilateral
Common causes of bacterial keratitis
Gram negative bacteria
Contact lens associated
Common causes of viral keratitis
HSV1 (coldsore on eye)
VZV (shingles)
Clinical features of infective keratitis
Red (especially near site of ulcer)
Bacterial = sticky
Viral = watery
Very painful
Photophobic
Vision may be affected depending on site
May get fluid level of pus (hypopyon) in bacterial
Management of bacteria keratitis
G. fluoroquinolone (eg moxifloxacin) hourly 48hrs, then QDS for 5 days
Management of viral keratitis
OC aciclovir or ganciclovir 5x/day for 1-2 weeks.
Complications of infective keratitis
Heals with scar which may affect vision
