Retailing :
Set of business activities that add value to products and services sold to consumers for their personal or family use
Multichannel strategy :
Retailers and some manufacturers sell in more than one channel
General merchandise retailers
Discount stores, specialty store, department stores, etc. they sell through multiple channels, such as the Internet.
Discount store :
A broad variety of merchandise, limited service, and low prices.
Specialty stores :
Concentrate on a limited # of complementary merchandise categories in relatively small stores.
Category specialist :
Narrow variety but a deep assortment of merchandise
Department Stores
retailers that carry many different types of merchandise and items within each type offer some customer services, and are organized into separate departments to display their merchandise
How is the level of difficulty a manufacturer has in getting retailers to purchase its products determine?
By the degree to which the channel is vertically integrated
The larger and more sophisticated the channel member, the less likely it is to use supply chain intermediaries.
