Resultant Forces Flashcards

1
Q

What is a resultant force?

A

A number of forces acting on an object may be replaced by a single force that has the same effect as all the og forces acting together. Single force = resultant force.

Q

What is work done on an object?

A

When a force causes an object to move through a distance, work is done on the object. Force does work on an object when the force causes a displacement of the object.

Q

What is the equation for work done?

A

Work done = force x distance
One joule of work is done when a force of one newton cause displacement of one meter

Q

What is the relationship between wd and energy transfer ?

A

When work is done, energy is transferred from one store to another. Mechanical or electrical- energy transfer pathway. Amount of joules in both are equal

Q

What happens if a force acts in the direction the object is moving?

A

The object will gain energy - energy transferred to its kinetic store

Q

What happens if a force acts in the opposite difect to the movement of the object?

A

The object will lose energy - transfer to the thermal store of the object and surroundings

Q

Example - women pulling bucket out of well

A

Work is done by the women as she exerts a force on the rope to pull the bucket up
The work done on the bucket is due to overcoming the weight of the bucket for distance
As bucket rises energy transferred to GPE store
