Quantities And Contact And Non Contact Flashcards
Scalar and vector quantities
Scalar - have magnitude only
Vector - have magnitude and direction - may be represented as an arrow. Length - magnitude and direction + direction
What is a force
A push or a pull that acts on an object due to interaction with another object.
Contact vs non contact
Contact - objects physically touch
Non contact - objects are physically separated
Examples of contact forces
Friction, air resistance, tension and normal contact forces
Examples of non contact forces
Gravitational force, electrostatic force, magnetic force. Force - vector
Weight
The force of gravity on a mass
Electrostatic force
Force between two objects which are charged
Thrust
Force causing an object to move
Air resistance - drag
The friction of air on a moving object
Upthrust
Force of a fluid pushing an object upwards - making it float
Compression
Forces that act inward on an object, squeezing it
Tension
Force transmitted through a cable or string when pulled on by forces acting on its opposite ends
Reaction force
Force due to contract between two objects
Magnetic force
Force experience between magnetic piles - attractive or repulsive
Gravitational attraction
Attractive force experienced between two objects with mass
Friction
Force arises when two surfaces are in contact with each other. Friction opposes the motion.
