Resultant Forces Flashcards

1
Q

What is resultant force?

A

Resultant force is the overall force acting on an object, as a result of multiple different forces.

Q

What do the arrows show in a free body diagram?

A

The sizes of the arrows show the relative magnitudes of the forces and the directions show the directions of the forces acting upon the object/person.

Q

What happens if a force moves an object through a distance?

A

Energy is transferred and work is done on the object.

Q

What happens when you are doing work against frictional forces?

A

Energy is being transferred to the kinetic energy store of the object because it starts moving, but some energy is also being transferred to thermal energy stores due to the friction (burning)

Q

What can we use scale drawings to find?

A

We can find the resultant force and the magnitude + direction of the resultant force. (Use scale: 1cm=1N)

Q

When work is done, can energy be transferred more than one way?

A

Yes, energy can be transferred ‘usefully’ or it can be ‘wasted’, but work is still done every time.
