Three principles form the foundation for restoratice justice
- Justice requires that we work to restore those who have been injured
- Those most directly involbed and affected by crime should have the opportunity to participate fully in the response if they wish
- Government’s role is to preserve a just public order, and the community’s is to build and maintain a just peace
Characteristics of Restorative Programs
Create opportunities for victims, offenders and community members who want to do so to meet to discuss the crime and its aftermath
Encounter

Expect offenders to take steps to repair the harm they have caused
Amends
Characteristics of Restorative Programs
Seek to restore victims and offenders to whole, contributing members of society
Reintegration
Provide oppotunities for parties with a stake in a specific crime to participate in its resolution
Inclusion
usually a face-to-face meeting, in the presence of a trained mediator, between the victim of a crime and the person who committed that crime
Victim-Offender Mediation
Participants may include people connected to the victim, the offender’s family members, and others connceted to the offender
Family Group Conferencing
Have also been called restorative justice conference, family group conference and community accountability conferences, originated as a response to juvenile crime
Restorative or Community Conferencing
a structured meeting between offenders, victims and both parties’ family and friends, in which they deal with the consequences of the crime and decide how best to repaor the harm
