What are characteristics of RLS?
A
- Lower leg discomfort @ rest, alleviated by movement
- BILATERAL
- Sx worse @ end of day/night
- 50% c/o of daytime somnolence

How do pts describe the sensation in their legs?
A
“Creeping, crawling, pulling, aching, itching, stretching”

What is the dx criteria? (6)
A
- Urge to move legs due to uncomfortable sensation
- Sx begin or worsen during rest/inactivity
- Sx relieved by movement
- Sx worse in evening
- Sx cannot be accounted for by another condition

What lab should you check?
A
Ferritin level (low dose associated w/ exacerbations)

What is the initial tx for RLS?
A
Dopamine agonist or alpha-2-∆ Ca channel ligation

What are other meds used for tx?
A
- Levodopa (those unresponsive to other meds or intermittent sx)
- Benzos (younger pts w/ intermittent sx)
