How do fold mountains form?
- When an area of sea seperate two plates, geosynclines form which gradually becomes more compressed to form sedimentary rock.
- When the two plates move towards each other, the layers of rock become folded.
- Eventually this becomes above sea level and is fold mountains
Characteristics of the alps
- High mountain ranges (mount blanc)
- glaciated valleys (Rhone valley)
- pyramid peaks (Matterhorn)
- fast flowing rivers
How and when did the alps form?
By collision of the Eurasian and African plates 35million years ago
Where is the alps located?
Mainly in Switzerland, France and Italy (Western side of Europe)
