Restless earth- Earthquakes Flashcards
How is an earthquake measured
The Richter scale (using a seismometer)
How do earthquakes happen
When plates get stuck pressure builds up. When built up pressure inside the earths crust is released, seismic waves spread from the focus (felt most strongly at the epicentre)
What type of plate boundary can an earthquake happen on?
Any
What is the focus?
The point inside the crust where the pressure is released
What is the epicentre
The point on the earths surface above the focus
What does a seismometer do
Detects vibrations and plots them on a seismograph. It is measured from 0-10
An example of an earthquake in a LEDC?
Haiti 2010 (transform plate margin)
What’s an example of an earthquake in a MEDC
Japan 2011 (destructive plate margin)
Example of LEDC earthquake?
Haiti 2010 (magnitude 7)
What caused the LEDC earthquake?
A transform plate margin
Effects of LEDC earthquake? Haiti
220,000 dead
1million homeless
Port au prince destroyed
Spread of disease
Responses to LEDC earthquake?
No international help for 4 days
Search and rescue efforts
Supplies provided internationally
Over 100million raised long term
Example of MEDC earthquake?
Japan 2011 (magnitude 9)
How was the MEDC earthquake caused?
A destructive plate margin
Effects of the MEDC earthquake?
16,000 dead
300,000 building destroyed
Nuclear power stations destroyed
Tsunami
Responses of the MEDC earthquake?
Emergency services help rescue
Japanese government provide for country
Massive rebuilding programme distracts other progress (nuclear)
