Respriation Flashcards
Define respiration
The release of energy from food.
What are the two advantages of inhaling through the nose.
1Air borne bacteria are filtered (hairs).
2. Air is moistened and warmed - this allows it to diffuse into capillaries in the lungs easier.
Pharynx
.Epiglottis (Flap that prevents food/water entering trachea.
• Larynx Vocal cords - produces sound by vibrations)
Trachea
• Air passes through here into the bronchi.
• Rings of cartilage surround the trachea to protect by ensuring it doesn't close in on itself.
Bronchi & Bronchioles
The trachea divides into the bronchi found in the lungs.
• The bronchi further divide into bronchiole (narrower).
• If a person suffers from asthma then their bronchiole are restricted.
• Asthma inhalers work by dilating (widening)
the bronchiole.
Alveoli
(Air sacs)
• Function: Gas exchange
• Capillaries surround the alveoli.
• Oxygen from air enters the capillaries in exchange for carbon dioxide.
