Responsible Driving Flashcards
What is proactive driving?
Driving with the aim to anticipate possible hazards and take action to reduce, minimize, or avoid danger before it can occur.
Where should most of your attention be given to while driving safely?
Looking forward and scanning for hazards that are developing ahead of you.
How far ahead of your vehicle should you look when driving in an urban area?
At least 12 to 15 seconds/one to one-and-a-half blocks ahead.
How far ahead of your vehicle should you look when driving in a rural area?
At least 20 to 25 seconds ahead of your vehicle.
What is the purpose of your visual lead time?
Provides you with time to respond to hazards ahead of you.
When should you check behind you by glancing in your rear view mirrors?
Every 8 to 12 seconds (about every block in an urban area); and when you anticipate slowing or stopping.
What is a fixed hazard? Give examples of fixed hazards.
A hazard that does not change/are permanent conditions and situations along the roadway. Examples: restricted vision areas such as curves, hills and hidden driveways’ intersections; merging roadways.
What is a variable hazard?
A hazard that changes through the day. Examples: pedestrians, left-turning vehicles; icy road surfaces; “stale” green lights; emergency vehicles.
What should you do if someone is following you too closely?
If it is safe to, reduce your speed just enough to encourage them to pass. If the person does not pas, create a wider space cushion between you and the vehicle ahead.
How much space should be left when stopping behind another vehicle in traffic?
Enough space so that you could move your vehicle into another lane without having to reverse.
What should your following time/distance be?
Under normal road and weather conditions, you should drive a minimum of two seconds behind the vehicle ahead. When conditions are less than ideal, increase your following distance.
What speed does the two-second rule work at?
Any speed.
What is the exception to the two-second rule?
Drivers of large vehicles, such as moto homes, should use a minimum four second following distance.
