RESPONSES to GLOBAL WARMING - global climate change Flashcards
first international response to global climate change ?
response to G.C.C
Rio Summit - Brazil - 1992
when was the Kyoto Protocol?
response to G.C.C
1997
What happened in the Kyoto Protocol?
response to G.C.C
- 100 governments signed a “climate changes Protocol
- however it took a while for any of the countries to ratify the protocol
When was the first condition reached of the Kyoto Protocol?
response to G.C.C
- 23rd May 2002
- Iceland become the 55th country to ratify the Protocol
However…..when was the Kyoto protocol made legal ?
response to G.C.C
- 2005 when Russia ratified the agreement in 2004 and the 2nd conclusion was met in Feb 2005
UK followed in 2008 with the UK Climate Change Act - what were the aspirational targets?
(response to G.C.C)
- 80% reduction of green house gases emissions
- 26% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2050
- 10% renewable electricity by 2010 and 20% by 2020
What happened in 2009?
response to G.C.C
Copenhagen Summit - however no agreement was met
- EU 20:20:20; 27. countries took part in months of negotiations, and concluded that there must be a 20% decrease in emissions by 2020 and increase in renewable energy by 2020
2014 data to back up the EU 20:20:20 targets
response to G.C.C
- on sat track to meet targets
- GHG emissions decreased beyond 20% reduction target and energy consumption is decreasing
2015 data of EU 20:20:20 targets
response to G.C.C
- only 15 members of the EU were in a position to meet their national targets in all 3 areas
2016 data of the response to global climate change
response to G.C.C
- emissions have fallen by 13% in the last 3 years to 38% below 1990 levels
- however, not enough to meet 4tg/5th carbon budgets / 2050 target - committed to publishing plans to meet 4th/5th carbon budget by the end of 2016
- almost all of the reduction has been from the power sector
What does it mean to “think global, and local”
Consider entire planet and take action in their own communities
- a bottom-up approach
what are companies with big brands doing ?
- tailoring for specific markets
- e.g McDonald’s signature dish in INDIA = chicken maharaja mac – USA = beef-based Big Mac
- it’s vital to understand customer needs
- supply chain needs to act locally to understand and meet those needs
define mitigation
- refers to a reduction in the output of greenhouse gases and/or increasing the size and amount of greenhouse gas storage or sink sites
define adaptation
refers to changing our lifestyles to cope with new environment rather than trying to stop climate change
David Bellamy quote
- “up and down, up and down - that’s how temperature and climate have always gone in the last…..climate change is an entirely natural phenomenon”
