Responses to cell and tissue injury Flashcards
What are the two types of injury that cause cell death?
sublethal injury
lethal injury
What is sublethal injury?
caused by hydropic change or fatty change
What is lethal injury?
cell is filled with fluid and eventually bursts
What are the longterm causes of cell death?
autophagy
atrophy
What is autophagy?
cell downsizing by eating itself
What is atrophy?
cell losing tissue size and number
What are the mechanisms of cell death?
necrosis
apoptosis
What are the 5 types of necrosis?
coagulative colliquative fibrinoid gangrenous causeous
What 3 groups can cells be divided into?
labile - blood, skin, gut
stable - liver, kidney
permanent - neurones, skeletal muscle
What happens when a skin incision is healed by first intension?
incision is joined by a layer of fibrin and then collagen
What happens when a skin incision is healed by second intention?
the incision is filled with granulation tissue and a small scar is left
What are examples of systemic factors that influence wound healing?
age nutrition metabolic status circulatory status hormones
What are examples of local factors that influence wound healing?
infection
mechanical factors
foreign bodies
What is organisation in wound healing?
repair of specialised tissue by formation of a scar
