Introduction to immunology Flashcards
What are the 3 lines of defence?
innate
adaptive
specificity memory
What are examples of physical defence mechanisms?
barriers (skin, epithelia)
movement (cilia)
trapping (mucus)
What are examples of biochemical defence mechanisms?
low pH (sweat, stomach)
What is an opsonin?
substance that coats cell/bacteria and enhances the ability of phagocytes to phagocytose the particle
What is a CRP?
C-reactive protein is used in monitoring inflammatory responses
What is the function of interferons?
to be excreted from cells that have a viral infection and warn nearby cells
What is autoimmunity?
immune response against body’s own healthy cells
What change occurs in immunity during pregnancy?
estrogens stimulate IgG and IgA production and they inhibit T cells that could reject the foetus
