response and coodination Flashcards
how do sensory nuerons transfer messages?
from PNS to CNS
damage to the frontal lobe would result in…
reduced reasoning and planning abilities and changes in personality
what is a neurotransmitter?
a chemical messenger that is released from one neuron and travels across the synapse to bind with the next nueron
what does the axon do
carry electrical impulses that are the means of communication within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body.
what does the axon terminal do
it makes synaptic contacts with other neurons with other neurons or the effector cell, at the synapse
what does the myelin sheath do
increases the speed of the neurotransmitter, and preserves strength
what does the dendrites do
receive input from many other neurons and carry those signals to the cell body.
what does the cell body do
contains genetic information, maintains the neuron’s structure, and provides energy to drive activities
define sensory neuron
a neuron that transmits neural info from PNS to CNS, sensory info from any sense.
define interneuron
transmit neural information within CNS, connects sensory and motor neurons
define motor neuron
transmits neural info from CNS to PNS, making a response
what does the cerebrum do
starts and manages conscious thinking
cerebellum function
coordinates movement and balance
brain stem function
breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, and sleep
corpus callosum function
connect the hemispheres of the brain
where are the adrenal glands located
above the pancreas
what shape is the thyroid
heart
what does the adrenal glands do
Prepares the body for “fight or flight” by increasing the heart rate and force of heart contractions, increasing blood flow to the muscles and brain
Pituitary gland It makes many different hormones eg. growth
hormone and ADH It produces many hormones, many of which control other glands, and also stores hormones made in other glands, such as oxytocin 17
what does the frontal lobe do
reasoning and personality
what does the parietal lobe do
sensory perception, including the management of taste,
hearing, sight, touch, and smell.
occipital lobe function
vision
temporal lobe function
understand and respond to the world around you. It plays a
key role in communication with other people, your ability to
access memories, use language and process emotions
where are noble gases located on the periodic table
in group 18
are groups vertacle or horizontal
verticle
are periods verticle or horizontal
