Responding To Change (B1.2) Flashcards
What does homeostasis mean?
Keeping a stable internal environment.
What does vasoconstriction mean?
Narrowing the blood vessels (capillaries)
How many senses do humans have?
36
What do sensory neurones do?
Receive impulses from the receptor cells.
What are relay neurones?
Short neurones that are found in the spinal cord. They link motor and sensory neurones and make up the brain.
What does thermoregulation mean?
Keeping your body temperature normal.
What is the control of water in the body called?
Osmoregulation
What is the hypothalamus?
A part of the brain that monitors temperature.
What happens when the erector muscles in the dermis contract?
The body hairs stand upright.
What is the dermis?

Release oils at the base of hairs to keep skin in good condition.
What is vasodilation?
Widening of the blood vessels (capillaries).
What is a stimulus?
Anything your body is sensitive to.
What do receptor cells do?
Detect a stimulus.
What is neurotransmission?
Travelling or transmission of impulses.
