Respitory System Flashcards
What is the function of the “Respitory System”
For the exchange of gasses in and out of the body. Brings in oxygen, and getting rid of carbon dioxide.
Function - Nose and Mouth
Warms up air, filters air, and moistens the air entering your body.
Funtion - Pharynx
Cavity behind the nose and mouth leading to the esophagus and larynx.
Funtion - Layrnx (Also what is it)
(Voice box) Hollow muscular organ where vocal cords are held and allows for speech. Covered by cartilage instead of bone (Cartilage is softer and more flexible than bone).
Function - Trachea (What is it)
(Windpipe) Tube that carries air from larynx to bronchial tubes.
Function - Bronchi
Tubes leading from the trachea to each lung.
Function - Bronchioles
Tiny tubes leading from the trachea to each lung. (Smaller than the bronchi)
Funtion - Lungs
(Fun fact: Your left lung is smaller than the right) Sponge-like organs responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide (aka gas exchange).
Function - Diaphragm
Dome shaped muscle under the lungs that expands and contracts to allow air in and out of the lungs. (Looks like an upside down bowl)
Function - Alveoli
(Looks like grapes) Located at the end of each bronchiole, these are tiny air sacs what are wrapped in capillaries. This is where oxygen passes through the walls of the capillaries into the blood stream and carbon dioxide exits thee bloodstream into the alveoli to be exhaled.
