Digestive Notes (suhas is fat) Flashcards
Functions of the digestive system
a. Physically and chemically breaks down food into usable molecules for the body
b. Turning food into different forms of energy and nutrients that keep you alive.
c. eliminates solid waste
Carbohydrates/Fats(lipids)/Proteins (think carbs)
Act as an energy source
Mouth function
Where digestion begins here, teeth and tongue help to physically break down food.
Salivary Glands function (Think carbs)
Saliva moistens and lubricates food. It aids in chemical digestion breaking down complex carbohydrates.
Esophagus
Uses peristalsis to physically squeeze the food down in the stomach.
Peristalsis
Series of involuntary wave like muscle contractions that move food in digestive tract.
ex. Peristalsis squeezes food down your esophagus to your stomach.
Stomach (think hydro and enzy)
The churning action of the stomach muscles physically breaks food. It also releases hydrochloride acid and enzymes for the chemical breakdown of food.
Gallbladder
Stores and receives bile from the liver, until it senses you have food. Sends bile to the small intestine.
Bile (think lipids)
Helps break down fats to fatty acids.
Pancreas (think S.F.S. and juicezyme)
During digestion, your pancreas makes pancreatic juices called enzymes. These enzymes break down sugars, fats, and starches.
What are enzymes in the digestive system
Pancreatic juices and hydrochloride acids
Small Intestine 90% (Breaks and Absorbs) (B.A.M.) (Main)
90% of digestion occurs here. Uses chemical breakdown and absorption of nutrients. (main site of digestion)
Liver (B.P.G.)Procces and stores
Produces bile and processes nutrients absorbed by the small intestine, also stores glucose and releases it into the bloodstream.
Large intestine (WMF) Like going to the bathroom
Absorbs water and minerals, formation of feces.
