Respiratory Therapy (RT) Flashcards
What is the function of Respiratory Services?
- Respiratory assessments
- Performs diagnostic tests to determine lung function (spirometry) and 02 saturation (oximetry)
- Assists with the maintenance of patients on ventilators
- Attend cardiac arrests (Code Blue)
- Draw ABG’s to assess patients adequacy of oxygenation
- Home Oxygen Program Assessment - to assess patients need for oxygen at home
- Set up and monitor equipment that provides positive pressure in the airways
- BiP AP and CP AP
- Therapeutic services
- Education services
- Assist with critical care patient transport (internal and external)
What are the indicators for Respiratory/O2 therapy?
- Respiratory arrest or difficulty breathing
- Cardiac arrest
- Heart attack
- Lung disease
- Chest injuries
- Airways obstruction
- Stroke
- Shock
- Seizures
- Diabetes
- Trauma
- Major blood loss
What are “High Flow Systems”? Name 2
Administer 02 by % through devices such as Nebulizer and Venturi Mask
What are “Low Flow Systems”? Name 2
Administer 02 by the number of liters through devices such as Nasal Prongs and Oxygen Mask.
Where is a Home O2 order recorded on the Kardex?
Discharge Planning
What is oximetry?
A procedure for measuring the concentration of oxygen in the blood.
How is oximetry done?
Using an oximeter.
What is a pulse oximeter and how does it function?
Pulse oximeters respond only to pulsations, such as those in pulsating capillaries of the area tested. It works by passing a beam of red and infrared light through a pulsating capillary bed. The ratio of red to infrared blood light transmitted gives a measure of the oxygen saturation of the blood.
List 4 O2 devices:
- Nasal cannula
- Simple oxygen face mask
- Venturi oxygen mask
- Nebulizer
Why is oximetry done?
To determine the amount of 02 in the blood
What is spirometry? What is another name for it?
Measurement of the air capacity of the lungs. Pulmonary function test.
What is aerosol therapy?
Administration of a bronchodilator in the form of a mist.
