Respiratory System Test Flashcards
What is internal respiration?
the process of repairing tissues
What is external respiration?
the breathing and exchange of gasses
What is the difference between internal respiration and external respiration?
the gas exchange site for external are the alveoli and capillaries and the gas exchange site for internal are the capillaries and cells
What are three processes that occur in the nasal cavity?
filters, warms up, and moistens air
What are the structures at the end of the bronchiole tubes called?
What is their structure and function?
alveoli are the small air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs
What is the main difference between breathing through your nose and breathing through your mouth?
Breathing through your nose filters all the air but breathing through your mouth does not/
What happens to the I diaphragm and intercostal muscles when you breath in? when you breath out?
when you breath in the diaphragm moves down and the intercostal muscles contract, when you breath out the diaphragm moves up and the intercostal muscles relax
Where is sound produced?
the larynx
What causes inspiration and expiration?
the contraction and relaxation caused by pressure changes
Contrast the air pressure during inspiration and expiration
during inspiration happens it increases the volume of the chest cavity creating a low pressure inside the chest. During expiration it decreases the volume of the chest cavity creating a high pressure inside the chest
What is tidal volume?
the amount of air that you normally inhale and exhale
What is inspiratory reserve volume?
the maximum volume of air that can be inhaled after exhaling normally
What is expiratory reserve volume?
the maximum volume of air that can be exhaled after inhaling normally
Define vital capacity
the maximum amount of air that you can inhale and exhale
What is residual volume?
the air that remains in your lungs after you exhale the maximum amount of air in your lungs
