Respiratory system and Urinary System Flashcards
Ventilation
movement of air into and out of lungs(breathing)
External Respiration
gas exchange between the blood and air in the lungs
Gas transport
in blood between the lungs and body cells
types of mechanical digestion
Chemical and Mechanical
what is mechanical digestion
large pieces into smaller pieces- does not change the chemical compound
what is chemical digestion
breaks food into simpler chemicals
wall structure of the alimentary canal
4 layers
Mucosa (Inner) layer
-Surface epithelium, connective tissue, and a little smooth muscle
-In some areas it is folded over to increase surface area - called lumen
-Contains glands that secrete mucus and digestive enzymes
-Protects underlying tissues and carries out secretion and absorption
what are the four layers of the alimentary canal
Mucosa(inner)
Submucosa
Muscular Layer
Serosa(outer)
Submucosa
-Loose connective tissue, glands, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves
-Nourishes surrounding tissues and carries away absorbed materials
Muscular layer
-2 coats of smooth muscle tissue, some nerves
-Controls the shape of the tube as when circular fibers contract the diameter decreases, and when the longitudinal fibers contract the tube shortens
Serosa (outer)
-Serous layer
-Protects underlying tissue, secrete serous fluid to moisten and lubricate the tubes outer surface so that the organs can move freely
Cheeks are…
outer layers of skin with subcutaneous fat
Help with expressions, chewing, and maintaining a moist inner liner
Lips are…
highly mobile
Have skeletal and sensory receptors
Used to sense the temperature and texture of foods
