Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the Head?
Air enters respiratory system through openings in your nose and mouth
They are linked together through an opening in the bank of the throat.
What is the trachea?
The tube that connects your mouth to the tubes that go into your lungs.
The trachea splits into 2 main tubes (the branches). They divide into smaller tubes.
What are the lungs?
They are all part of the tubes surrounded by long tissue. There are different sections to the lungs called lobes.
What is a gas exchange and how and where does gas move?
What: The process of oxygen and carbon dioxide moving between the lungs and blood.
How: By diffusion. The process where gases move from high concentration to a low concentration.
Where: The alveoli. At the end of the bronchiole.
What is breathing and ventilation?
When your muscles change the size of your lungs and when you take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.
Ventilation is the movement of air into and out of lungs.
What happens when you breath in and out?
In:
- Your diaphragm contracts and moved downwards
- Your intercostal muscles contract and your ribs move up and out.
- Pressure in lungs decrease with respect to external air pressure.
- Lung where increases (as air moves into your lungs).
Out:
- Your diaphragm relaxes and moves upward.
- Your intercostal muscles relax and your ribs move down and in.
- Pressure in lungs increases with respect to external air pressure.
- Lung volume decreases as air moves out.
What is the air passage through the body?
Lungs are positioned inside the chest cavity. The ribs from a cage protecting them.
The right lung has 3 cavities. Which is bigger than the left (it only has two).
The action of breathing means that the lungs are constantly moving in and out.
In order to prevent friction, the lungs are surrounded by the pleural membrane; a complete lining which is smooth and has moist, slimy mucus.
What happens if you have a narrow bronchiole?
If you are running with a narrow bronchiole it’s going to be harder for the oxygen to reach your blood and muscles but if you’re sitting down it will be slightly easier.
What is the pharynx and larynx?
Pharynx: Deals with the digestive and respiratory system by receiving air from the nasal cavity and air, food and water from the oral cavity.
Larynx: Protects the lower airways and facilitates respiration.
