More into depth: CNS Flashcards
What is the CNS?
The central nervous system coordinates our responses to stimuli; this means this is where all the information from the organs are sent and where reflexes and actions are coordinated. It consists of the brain and spinal cord, where the neurons transmit electrical messages/impulses to the brain. These are instructions from the CNS to, for example, muscles and glands.
What is the CNS divided into?
The nervous system is divided into the CNS and peripheral system.
What does the central nervous system consists of?
The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord contains interneurons which link sensory neurons to motor neurons.
What does the peripheral system consists of?
The peripheral system consists of nerves which contain sensory neurons and motor neurons.
What is the peripheral system divided into?
The peripheral system is divided into the somatic nervous system which is voluntary movement and the autonomic nervous system which is involuntary movement. The autonomic nervous system is divided into rest or digest response (Parasympathetic division) and fight or flight response (Sympathetic division).
How does the nervous system work?
The nervous system also consists of synapses which communicate across neurons using signal molecules called neurotransmitters.
