Respiratory System Flashcards
the function of Respiration is
To provide oxygen to the body cells for use in creating energy.
Describe the gas exchange
Delivering oxygen to cells and removing carbon dioxide.
Air is inhaled through (which two cavities)
Nasal cavity and oral cavity
Air, once entered through one of the cavities, proceeds to pass the
Pharynx and Larynx
After the Larynx, the cartilage-lined tube which air enters is called the
Trachea
Flap that covers trachea, in order to prevent solid and liquids from entering
Epiglottis
Describe the bronchus extensions
The bronchus follows the trachea and spilts to into two individual bronchi.
The bronchi go into
The lungs
Inside the lungs bronchi branch out to narrower tubes called?
Bronchioles
What are at the end of bronchioles?
Alveoli
Describe Alveoli.
Small sacs, that inflate and deflate as a person inhaled and exhales. This is the main site of gas exchange.
Gas exchange takes place by diffusion between the (2 components)
Alveoli and blood.
What reduces pressure required to inflate alveoli by lowering surface tension?
The surfactant.
Oxygen passes into the alveoli walls into…
Surrounding blood capillaries and into red blood cells.
What is exchanged in the alveoli?
Oxygen and carbon dioxide.
