Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
3 major functions of the respiratory system
A
- Gas exchange
- Filtration of some matter
- Thermoregulation
2
Q
Structures of the respiratory tract (in order)
A
- Nasal passage
- Pharynx (digestion)
- Larynx (voice box; cartilagenous)
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
- Alveoli (relevant to surface tension: tendency of liquid molecules to associate with each other)
3
Q
What substance serves to decrease surface tension in the alveoli?
A
Surfactant decreases surface tension and prevents the alveoli from collapsing
4
Q
Which gas does pulmonary capillaries have a high partial pressure of
A
Carbon dioxide
(Pulmonary capillaries bring deoxygenated blood)
5
Q
Inspiration
A
- The diaphragm (flattens downward) and external intercostal muscles (push outwards) contract, expanding the thoracic activity
- The lungs expand along with the surrounding cavity, lowering internal pressure
- Air flows in due to low internal pressure
Mechanism: negative pressure breathing
6
Q
Expiration
A
- Normal expiration is passive, requiring no muscular involvement
- If consciously forced, it involves the internal intercostal muscles
- The diaphragm is relaxed (pushing upward and decreasing thoracic cavity)
7
Q
Measurement describes the volume of air inhaled per breath
A
Tidal volume
