Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the 5 major processes of the Respiratory System?
- ) Ventilation
- ) Pulmonary Gas Exchange
- )Transport of gasses through blood
- )Systematic gas exchange
- ) Cellular Respiration
Define Pharynx
Passageway for air and food
Define Larynx
Seperates air and food/ liquid
Define Trachea
Transports air from larynx to bronchi
Define Epiglottis
flap made of elastic cartilage covered with a mucous membrane, attached to the entrance of the larynx. The function is to seal off the windpipe when eating
Thyroid Cartilage
Biggest and largest cartilage in trachea
Cricoid Cartilage
Ring shaped cartilage of the larynx that provides attachment for the muscles involved in opening/closing of the airway and speech production.
What are the 3 REspIratory Phases
Rest
Inspiration
Expiration
What are the 2 respiratory zones?
- ) Conducting zone
2. ) Respiratory Zone
What happens in the conducting zone
Warms, humidifies, and conducts air
What structures are part of the conducting zone (6 structures)
Nose, Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, and Bronchioles
-These structures form a continuous passageway for air to move
What happens in the Respiratory Zone?
Carries gas exchange
What are the structures in the Respiratory zone?(3)
Respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveoli
-This is where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange with the blood.
What are the 3 pressure phases? (AAI)
Atmospheric
Alveolar
Intrapleural
Why are mammals lungs highly developed with large internal surface area?
Respiratory surface area increases with metabolic need. Mammals are endothermic and have higher metabolic needs than fish and reptiles.
