Digestion (Lab 6) Flashcards
Ingestion
Takes in food & Water into the mouth
Secretion
Releases water, acid, buffers, and enzymes into the G.I. Tract
Motility
Mixes and moves secretions towards the anus
Digestion
Breaks down food into smaller forms for absorption
Absorption
Takes up nutrients into bloodstream to transport to the rest of the body
Defication
Elimination of wastes & other substances from the body
What are the two groups of the digestive system?
G.I. Tract & Accessory Structures
What are the structures of the gastrointestinal (G.I.) tract?
Mouth Pharynx Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine Large Intestine
What are the Accessory digestive organs?
Teeth Tongue Salivary Glands Pancreas Liver Gall Bladder
What are the 6 processes?
Absorption Secretion Ingestion Digestion Motility Defecation
What are the 4 functional layers?
Serosa (outermost layer)
Muscularis
Submucosa
Mucosa (innermost layer)
Serosa (outermost layer)
Forms peritoneum, folds into mesentaries
Muscularis
Main muscle layer. Contains both voluntary and involuntary layer. Neurons control GI motility
Submucosa
Elastic connective tissue. Contains blood and lymphatic vessels. Neurons control GI secretion
Muscoa (innermost layer)
Various epithelial cells. Contain blood and lymphatic vessels. Thin Layer of muscle
