Respiratory System Flashcards
Respiratory Rate?
16-20 resps
Factors influencing resp rate?
Increase carbon dioxide
Decrease oxygen
Vital capacity
Blood pressure
Alcohol
Exercise
Stress
Drugs
Inhalation?
Intercostal muscles contract, rib cage moves upwards and outward, diaphragm contracts and flattens so lung volume increases
Exhalation?
Intercostal muscles relax, rib cage moves down and inward, diaphragm relaxes and moves up so lung volume decreases
Gaseous exchange?
Oxygen diffuses into blood from alveoli and carbon dioxide diffuses from blood into alveoli.
Transport of o2 and Co2
Red blood cells transport o2 around the body
Plasma transports co2 around body
Structures between the lungs?
Heart Vena cava Aorta Trachea Oesophagus
Lung layers?
Parietal later is the outer layer of membrane
Visceral layer forms inner layer of membrane
Pleural cavity is hollow space for lungs lubricated by plural fluid
Nervous controls of breathing?
Chemical- Chemorecpetors in wall of aorta and caratoid arteries detect change in blood e.g increase of co2 means increased breathing rate.
Control centre in hind of the brain: medulla oblongata and the pons regulates breathing
