Respiratory System Flashcards
Breathing rate
How many breaths you take per minute
Tidal volume
The amount you breathe (in and out )in one normal breath
Minute ventilation
The volume of you breathe in one minute
Tidal volume X breathing rate = minute ventilation
Functions of the respiratory system
- to bring oxygen into the body
2. to take carbon dioxide out of the body
Pathway of air
Never play Luton town ball Boy Association
Nasal passage, pharynx, larynx, trachea,bronchi , bronchioles,alveoli
Gaseous exchange
> Occurs in the alveoli
Delivers oxygen from the lungs to bloodstream and extracts CO2 from the bloodstream is to the lungs
O2 leaves the alveoli through capillaries and enters the bloodstream
Athletes with good endurance can diffuse O2easier because they have better cardiac output and on the surface area of the alveoli
Aerobic exercise
Long duration of low intensity exercise where oxygen is needed E.g. 1500m,football, walking
Anaerobic exercise
Short duration of high-intensity exercise without the use of oxygen
> waste product=lactic acid
E.g. 100 meter sprint, weightlifting
Why is lactic acid formed?
During anaerobic exercise >oxygen runs out > muscles use glycogen as fuel >glycogen is made from nutrients in food >When run out lactic acid is made >causing Muscles to fatigue
Three ways to get rid of lactic acid
- rest
- stretch
- ice bath
