Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the respiratory system?
The respiratory system allows our body to breathe, bringing oxygen to the blood and removing carbon dioxide
Sections of the respiratory system
- the conducting system
- the lungs
- the diaphragm
Functions of the respiratory system
- air to lungs
- oxygen into blood
- remove carbon dioxide
- expel heat and water in breathed out air
- allow vocal cords to create speech
What is inspiration?
Breathing in
What is Expiration?
Breathing out
Where does inspiration occur?
It is initiated by the diaphragm
When does expiration occur?
Expiration occurs when the diaphragm relaxes and the chest cavity returns to its smaller at rest state
Why does your breathing increase during exercise?
Because during exercise your muscles require more oxygen which means the heart and lungs are moving faster to provide them with oxygen
What is the conducting system?
The air passages
What are the major elements of the conducting system?
- nasal cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- trachea
- bronchi
- bronchioles
- terminal bronchioles
What does the nasal cavity do?
Warms and filters air
What is the Pharynx?
The ‘throat’ which allows food and air to pass
What is the Larynx?
The voice box
What is the Trachea?
The airway air passes through on the way to the bronchi
