Respiratory System Flashcards
What is respiration?
Oxygen in carbon dioxide out
What are alveoli? What process occurs there?
Alveoli are tiny hollow air sacs in the lungs. Gas exchange occurs there.
What is the diaphragm? What does it do when we breathe?
The diaphragm is a large muscle at the base of the lungs, when we breathe it contracts and relaxes.
What is the function of the nose?
Warms, moistens, cleans air.
What other systems work closely with the respiratory system?
The circulatory system takes oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.
Explain the process of gas exchange, starting with the nose, trachea, bronchioles and alveoli.
The nose warms, moistens, and cleans the air on its way to the trachea. Then via the bronchus and bronchioles it goes to the alveoli, where exchange of different gases takes place.
What is asthma?
Asthma is an information or narrowing of the airways that can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightening or coughing.
What is emphysema?
Emphysema is damage to the air sacs in the lungs affecting their ability to exchange gases and get enough oxygen into the blood, this is caused mainly by smoking.
