respiratory system Flashcards
what is external respiration?
exchange of O2 and CO2 between AIR and BLOOD
what is internal respiration?
exchange of O2 and CO2 between BLOOD and CELLS/TISSUES
what is cellular respiration?
Production of ATP within cells
composition of EXHALED air
O = 21%
C = 0.004%
N =78%
Ar = 1%
composition of INHALED air
O = 16%
C = 4%
N = 78%
Ar = 1%
4 conditions required for gas exchange
- concentration gradient to drive diffusion
- a thin cell membrane
- a moist surface
- a high surface area
what is the role of a surfactant?
reducing AIR TENSION at the air-liquid interface in the alveoli. it prevents collapsing and ensures efficient gas exchange
3 factors of the nasal cavity
- it FILTERS the air through nose hairs and celia
- it WARMS UP the air through heat from the surrounding blood vessels
- it gets MOISTENED by the surface of the air passage
what is the function of celia and mucus in the respiratory system?
celia: in charge of keeping the lungs clean of debris and dirt by send it it back to the throat
mucus: traps and transports debris
why are women’s voices higher pitched than men’s?
pitch is due to LENGTH, THICKNESS, ELASTICITY, and TENSION. they have longer vocal chords than women and their larynx and vocal chord grows rapidly during puberty.
