Respiratory system Flashcards
1
Q
Respiratory system
A
A series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide
2
Q
Nose
A
- contains mucous membranes and tiny hairs called cilia to trap dust and removes bacteria
- moisturise, purify and cleans the air
3
Q
Larynx
A
- contains the vocal cords
- protects the trachea from food aspiration
4
Q
Trachea aka windpipe
A
- lined with cilia and mucus to trap and expel particles
- lets air travel down to the lungs
5
Q
Bronchioles
A
- carries oxygen to the alveoli
6
Q
Lungs
A
- primary organs in respiration
- contains alveoli
7
Q
Alveoli
A
- tiny balloon like structures
- surrounded by capillaries where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide is removed
8
Q
Diaphragm
A
- dome shaped base of chest ( muscle)
- crucial role in breathing by contracting and relaxing
9
Q
Inhalation
A
- diaphragm = downwards
- negative pressure
10
Q
Exhalation
A
- diaphragm relaxes
- air = out
11
Q
Breathing
A
The mechanical action of getting air in and out of the lungs
12
Q
Epiglottis
A
Prevents food from going down the airway
13
Q
Rib cage
A
Protects the heart and lungs
