Respiratory System Flashcards
The respiratory system consists of: (5)
Pharynx
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchi
Lungs
The primary function of this system is to furnish oxygen for individual tissue cells, and to take away the waste products and carbon dioxide produced by those same cells
Respiratory System
is the process of inhaling oxygen into the lungs, and exhaling carbon dioxide.
That process includes the ventilation of the lungs and the exchange of air in the lungs and blood within the capillaries of the alveoli of the lungs.
External respiration
is the metabolic process by which living cells use blood flowing through the capillaries, absorbing the oxygen (O2 )they need and releasing the carbon dioxide (CO2)they create.
Internal Respiration
is the pressure contributed by a gas to the total atmospheric pressure
Partial Pressure
Air exerts a pressure downward, due to gravity
A pressure of 760 mm Hg is defined as one atmosphere (1.0 atm) of pressure
(True or False?)
True
The external opening of the nose is called
nostrils or anterior nares
The dividing partition between the nostrils is the
Nasal Septum
The conchae passages lead to the passageway called the
Pharynx
Part of the nose that lines the mucous membrane. About 1 qt. of mucous is produced daily
Cilia
Two important parts of the nose that separate the nasal cavities from the mouth cavity
Palatine bones and Maxilla (upper jaw bone)
The nose has 5 functions:
clue:
-serves
-warms
-cilia and mucous membrane
-contains
-aids
- It serves as an air passageway.
- It warms and moistens inhaled air.
- Its cilia and mucous membrane trap dust, pollen, bacteria, and foreign matter.
- It contains olfactory receptors, which smell odors.
- It aids in phonation and the quality of voice.
The _______ is the correct term for the throat. It is a muscular and membranous tube that is about 5 inches long, extending downward from the base of the skull. It eventually becomes the esophagus.
Pharynx
3 regions of the pharynx that are behind the nose? behind the mouth? behind the larynx?
behind the nose - Nasopharynx
behind the mouth - Oropharynx
behind the larynx - Laryngopharynx
There are 7 openings into the pharynx.
In the nasopharynx, there are two openings from the eustachian tubes of the ear, and two openings from the posterior nares of the nose (True/False?)
True
In the oropharynx is one opening from the mouth (True/False?)
True
The pharynx has 3 functions:
- serves as a passageway for air
- serves as a passageway for food
- aids in phonation by changing its shape
