Respiratory System Flashcards
Inspiration
breathing in
Expiration
breathing out
Ventilation rate
movement of air between environment and lungs via inspiration + expiration
Respiration rate
number of breaths taken within set amount of time
alveoli
- small air sacs or cavity in lung that give tissue honey comb appearance
- expands SA for exchange of oxygen + carbon dioxide
Gaseous exchange
different gases transferred in opposite directions across specialised respiratory surface
Capillaries
- smallest of blood vessels
- serve to distribute oxygenated blood from arteries to tissues of the body + feed deoxygenated blood from tissues back into the veins
Brochiolos
tiny branch of air tubes in lungs that is a continuation of bronchus
Mouth, nose & nasal cavity
Allows for the movement of both air, food and liquid
Pharynx
Carries air, food and fluid down from the nose and mouth
Larynx
Used to make sound and talk
Trachea
Brings air back into the lungs
Primary Bronchi
Conducts air into the lungs
Bronchioles
Carry air into the lungs
Lungs
Transport oxygen and remove extra carbon dioxide
