Respiratory System Flashcards
Upper airway: (consider where they might be located as well)
Trachea, oropharynx (behind the mouth), larynx (voice box), nose & mouth, nasopharynx (behind the nose), and epiglottis.
Lower airway components:
Trachea, carina, trachea branches to left & right main stem bronchi, and then to the lungs.
Bronchioles (smaller branches of bronchi)
Alveoli (in contact w/ pulmonary capillaries, they diffuse o2 from respiratory system to the body)
Pulmonary capillaries (diffuse co2 from the body to the alveoli)
Surfactant (helps keep the alveoli from collapsing)
Name the 2 types of pleura and their functions:
Visceral pleura: lines outer surface of the lungs
Parietal pleura: lines inside surface of chest cavity
(Inhale, your parietal pulls the visceral which pulls the lungs)
Where are the Intercostal muscles & what do they do?
Located between the ribs, they contract when inhaling and expand the thoracic cage
