Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the respiratory system
To bring in oxygen (inhale) and expel carbon dioxide (exhale). This exchange is called respiration.
What does the nasal cavity do?
They filter dust particles (using cilia). They warm the air with blood vessels and moisten the air with mucous. So they filter, warm, and moisten.
What does the Pharynx do
It allows air to pass through your trachea and into your lungs.
What are cilia?
Nose hairs
What is the larynx mostly made of and why
Cartilage to give it structure and to stop it from collapsing
What is the purpose of the larynx?
It connects the pharynx to the trachea.
What does the epiglottis do?
It shuts the opening of the trachea during swallowing and only allows food to travel through the esophagus
Where are vocal cords found?
In the trachea
What lines the trachea and why
Mucous and cilia that push dust particles towards the mouth and away from the lungs
What does the Trachea do
connects the larynx to the bronchi
What are bronchi made of
cilia, cartilage and mucous
What does each bronchiole end with?
A cluster of alveoli
Where is gas exchanged in the respiratory system?
Alveoli
What surrounds alveoli?
capillaries
What are capillaries?
Tiny blood vessels whose membrane is only made up of one row of cells
